Margaret is one pretty amazing woman. She’s a single mum raising two boys. She has the added challenge that they both have Autism. Margaret was publicly awarded last year for her achievements as a mum managing her two boys Sam and Jack. Part of the celebration was to have her 2011 family story captured with me, and to get a wall canvas. The one she chose for the wall canvas was this one:
Sam, the eldest, turned 14 recently. When he was very little he had a brain tumour and came through successfully. It very timely to have these beautiful pictures done to celebrate another year! I look for connection when I’m photographing families, and wondered how this photo session would go. Of course, families come in all shapes and sizes and this one was no exception. Given that home is where the heart is for this family, we went with home for the venue.
Sam is very close with his mum.
It was evident that they hang out a lot talking about the things he loves like the Wiggles.
This is one of my favourites.
Margaret was watching Jack outside and didn’t realise that Sam was watching her.
She says he often watches her when she’s not looking at him.
Then when she looks at him, he often looks away.
When I first arrived Jack was going for his life on the trampoline
…and pretty much didn’t stop for the next two hours!
Capturing this open body language was a bit of a coup.
Evidently Jack felt comfortable enough in my presence to let me in.
Jack is happiest quietly doing his thing.
Off goes the gentle giant to his room.
What’s going to happen when these boys become men Margaret?!
I love the ambiguity in this.
And to end with a very unusual moment, with the boys close together.
