90th Birthday Celebration

Iris turned 90!

What a special occasion it was.  Can you imagine what you might have seen in your life by the time you hit 90? Iris’s daughter Libby emailed asking for prints from her mother’s 80th birthday…yes that’s right, I was there ten years ago with this wonderful family.  It was decided that I would come and photograph Iris’s 90th birthday celebrations. They planned a lovely Sunday afternoon picnic at Libby’s house complete with cake and candles.  I had an instant vision of the sorts of images I’d be after when Libby said this in her out-of-the-blue email:

‘Mum is pretty frail, now. She is like an old puss, snoozing away. She still has her lovely smile when she wakes up.  I would love you to take some more photos of our cheerful family.  A few people are travelling to get here.’

You’re on, Libby, what time do I start?

The challenge

was to be there without being there.  If I could be invisible, I would be.  The last thing I wanted was for everyone to feel awkward at having a photographer along to a rather intimate family affair. I much prefer to blend in and be a part of the day, if I can.  The children were absolutely delightful and whimsical, the adults were all relaxed and had a superb time, and Iris was just as lovely as I remembered her from ten years ago. I’m pleased that these images accurately reflect the sentiment of the day.

To showcase

this special experience, Libby is looking at investing in a combination of items.  She’s thinking about the limited edition story book (that presents all 100 images of the day in a customised layout), two beautiful artworks for her walls, and a boxed set of ten matted and signed archival prints that can be individually framed to personal taste.

Congratulations Iris, on turning 90.  It was an absolute pleasure to be there to capture such a special day in your family’s story.
